Kindness Over Muscular Dystrophy Event at Captain Lawrence Brewing Company June 4 from 7 -11 pm supports Conner Curran, son of Chris and Jessica Curran of Ridgefield.
"This event supports our son, Conner Curran, who unfortunately was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy," explains Chris Curran. "The Westchester NY and Fairfield CT Community have generously come together to raise awareness and funds for a cure," he adds.
Captain Lawrence Brewing Company has generously donated their facility in Elmsford (444 Saw Mill River Rd) as well asbeer for Saturday's fundraiser. "They have even brewed a special KOMD brew for the month of June to benefit Kindness Over Muscular Dystrophy with proceeds going directly to Parent Project Muscular Dystrophy," says Chris.
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy affects 1 in 3500 boys and it is a fatal genetic disorder affecting muscles of the limbs, trunk, lungs and heart. This disorder is marked by a progressive loss of balance and muscle strength. All muscles and especially the heart and lungs lose function over time and eventually stop working. Kids with DMD usually require a wheel chair by around age 12 -14. Eventually they lose the ability to move their arms and hands and are unable to perform even the simplest tasks like hugging their parents or feeding themselves. Unfortunately those with Duchenne don’t live past their early 30’s.
"The simple words in the Duchenne diagnosis shattered our family’s world and brought us to our knees. This was a devastating diagnosis for Conner and heartbreaking for us as his parents," says Chris.
Chris and his wife, Jessica remain hopeful. "A cure is just outside of our grasp, however, the scientific community is on the cusp of finding that cure. Our community has surrounded us with love, kindness and hope and is helping us to raise funds to change the course of this disease forever! We are so grateful to each and every one of them!"
