OCTOBER 6, 2019 – JANUARY 26, 2020 KMA’s Learning Center is transformed into a hands-on creative lab that explores Abstract Expressionism. Learn about this art movement and style, experience unique art techniques and create your own abstract expressionist works of art.
FAMILY DAY: EXPRESS YOURSELF SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 12:00 – 4:00 PM Get inspired by a variety of surprise happenings around the KMA, including expressive dance performances and experimental music, and explore your own ways of artistic self-expression. Abstract painting, dynamic community art projects, and other activities for friends and family running throughout afternoon. Free to members, non-members free with Museum admission.
SCHOOL’S OUT / ART’S IN T 11/5, F 11/29, T 12/24, TH 12/26, F 12/27, T 12/31, TH 1/2, F 1/3 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM, DROP-IN Drop in to the Learning Center on select school vacation days for unique artist-led projects where kids can make an artistic mess, experiment with new materials and practice unusual artmaking techniques all inspired by the abstract expressionist works on view. SPARKLING AMAZONS: ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST WOMEN OF THE 9th ST. SHOW OCTOBER 6, 2019 – JANUARY 26, 2020 Sparkling Amazons presents the pioneering contribution by women artists to the Abstract Expressionist movement and the significant role they played as bold innovators within the New York School during the 1940s and 50s. This show brings together for the first time since 1951 works by the 11 women artists who participated in the groundbreaking 9th St. show. LEE AND ME THURSDAY, OCTOBER 24, 6:00 – 8:00 PM Join Ruth Appelhof, PhD, former Executive Director of Guild Hall, East Hampton as she talks about her relationship with Lee Krasner. Krasner is the subject of her recent personal memoir, Lee and Me, inspired by the 1974 summer Appelhof spent with the artist in East Hampton, Long Island. Get a glimpse into the artist’s intense and idiosyncratic personal life as well as her groundbreaking work. $20 members, $25 non-members. Includes reception.
PICTURE & PROSE MONDAY, JANUARY 13, 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM Explore the nexus between important art and literature. Following a private tour of the Sparkling Amazons exhibition, participate in a discussion of Mary Gabriel’s critically acclaimed book, Ninth Street Women, now being developed into a television series. $10 members, $15 non-members. ROTEM RESHEF: ARCADIA OCTOBER 6, 2019 – JANUARY 26, 2020 In Arcadia, Israeli artist Rotem Reshef has collected organic materials, some from the KMA grounds, to paint monumental rolls of unstretched canvas that are suspended from the walls. The marks and vibrant palette which saturate the entire surface reference the natural world, and the gesture of pouring paint reveals her unconventional artistic process that filters and redefines abstraction and expression. ARTIST IN CONVERSATION SUNDAY, OCTOBER 27, 3:00 – 5:00PM Join Rotem Reshef, Christopher Rothko and Stephen Maine as they discuss Reshef’s processbased artistic practice, the influence of Helen Frankenthaler on her work and her unique response to abstract expressionism in her site-specific installation in The Spot Gallery. $20 members, $25 non-members. FAKES, FORGERIES AND OTHER DECEPTIONS THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 6:00 – 8:00 PM Samuel Sachs II, President, The Pollock-Krasner Foundation and one of the most pre-eminent former museum directors in America, will lecture on the history of forgeries and present a test at the end to see who can tell a fake from the real thing. $20 members, $25 non-members. ANIMATED FILMS FROM THE CREATIVE CULTURE PROGRAM AT THE JACOB BURNS FILM CENTER SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 3:00 – 4:30 PM Enjoy the premier screening at the KMA of animated films from the Creative Culture Program at the Jacob Burns Film Center. HIMMEL AWARD AND LECTURE SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 6:00 – 8:00 PM Hear the legendary Philippe de Montebello, former director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, speak about the changing world of museums and art. The Himmel Award is held in honor of Betty Himmel “in recognition of creators, conceivers, radical thinkers and risk-takers that provoke new thinking in art and design.” $50 members, $75 non-members, $15 students.
