Katonah Museum of Art Young Artists Exhibit February 5 - 26, 2023

For the past 40 years, the Katonah Museum of Art has hosted a yearly exhibition called Young Artists—a perennially favorite exhibition—which displays the work of high school seniors from both public and private schools throughout the region.

An impactful program that supports the growth of student artists, the show plays an integral role in the senior experience, providing a unique opportunity for students who plan to pursue the arts beyond high school. For the Museum, this idea of access and education is at the heart of its mission. Arts education has been a foundation of the KMA since its inception. Making the arts more accessible has been a core tenet, reflected in the belief that all individuals can have a close connection to the arts experience.

The union between making the arts available and the importance of education drives the Young Artists exhibition. Not only do students have their art displayed at the Museum, but the program also gives students exposure to the entire exhibition process, including the behind-the-scenes elements that are required to stage a Museum exhibition. The program includes several different educational components. The first, a graphic design workshop, involves a collaboration between students and graphic design educators to create the invitation and postcard that are used to promote the exhibition. At the end of the graphic design workshop, one student's design is chosen to be used for that year selected in a voting process by other student artists, Museum staff, and the Museum board.

The second component permits the students to explore a curator's role as they participate in the exhibition's installation. This process allows them to think about how to organize the exhibition and what makes sense regarding the conceptual idea of how the pieces should be displayed out on the wall—this includes the students being actively involved in the installation process, including measuring and hanging. During this experience, the students work with professional art installers who support the Museum's other exhibits.

For high school seniors, the Young Artists experience lasts a lifetime and creates a legacy that has touched, inspired, and connected many generations of young artists in the community.
