Summer of Smiles, an Overwhelming Success!

Smiles for Smilow and the Madison Chamber of Commerce teamed up to bring the Summer of Smiles to Madison.

Smiles for Smilow presented the “Summer of Smiles Community Rally” to members of the Madison Chamber of Commerce in May.  The basic idea was for patrons to make a donation to help the teens at Smilow Cancer Hospital through Smiles for Smilow.  Printed “Smiles” were hung at the local businesses with the name of the donor;  thus filling our town with Smiles.

Many Madison Chamber members supported the effort including The Madison Avenue Salon, Meriano’s Bakery, Tidewater Inn, Dr. Miller DDS, The Hammonasset Package Store, Mercy by the Sea, Ciao Bella, The CT Pharmacy of Madison, The Bright Side, J.Horton, The Nosy Goose, The Hartmann Group, and Silver Moon.

A new pediatric wing is currently under construction at Smilow Cancer Center at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital.  Smiles for Smilow ran the Summer of Smiles program to raise funds to donate a media cabinet to this new wing.  This cabinet would be used primarily by the pre-teen and teen patients at Smilow.  The original goal was to raise $700 to cover the cost of the cabinet.  However, thanks to community support, the program raised over $1500!  Not only will Smiles for Smilow donate the media cabinet, but many games and movies to fill the cabinet as well.

Smiles for Smilow is made up of a group of hardworking community teens who volunteer through their club at Daniel Hand High School.  The leaders of the club include Alexandra Minutillo (President), Brooke Kuryan and Brittney Miller (Co-Vice Presidents), Marisa Padelli (Treasurer), Holly Edwards (Secretary), and Abby Valentin (Public Relations).

Smiles for Smilow exists due to the volunteer efforts of each and every member of the club.  The group meets at the High School once a week to discuss ‘fun’-raisers and how to increase community awareness of their cause.  Future plans include football game fun-raisers, Daniel Hand/Madison apparel and novelty items, and the Harte Kids Fest.  Smiles for Smilow  is honored to have been invited to participate in the first Leadership Forum of the Childhood Cancer Alliance of CT taking place October 2015.
