DEEP Hosts Program "All About Bees, Our Great Pollinators"

Connecticut's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) will host a free program by Mark Creighton, the State Beekeeper, entitled All About Bees, Our Great Pollinators at the Kellogg Environmental Center, Derby at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 14th. Attendees will learn about the history, behavior and current threats facing this important pollinator. Following the program the Kellogg Center will host a honey tasting station featuring wildflower, buckwheat and avocado honey as well as several other varieties. The Center is located at 500 Hawthorne Avenue.

Bees have always played an important role in pollinating plants. Native bees, honey bees and bumble bees all have suffered changes in populations due to a variety of reasons. These challenges have made beekeeping more difficult and labor intensive. The program will feature the tools of the beekeeper and demonstrate how bees are handled and cared for throughout the year. Learn how to harvest honey and how we can help improve conditions for bees.

The program is offered free of charge, donations accepted. For further information, directions, or to register please email donna.kingston@ct.gov or phone the Kellogg Environmental Center at (203) 734-2513.
