August 3rd is National Watermelon Day

Citrullus lanatus, we salute you. Did you know that watermelons come in over 300 different varieties? Watermelons are available in yellow, pink, white, and red, and grow in different shapes and sizes. The seedless variety is a picnic favorite. August 3rd is the official day when we celebrate this summertime classic. Throw a slice on the grill, it's a delicious, nutritious treat, and contain approximately 92% water when eaten freshly cut.

The Guinness Book of World Records states that the heaviest watermelon weighed two hundred and sixty two pounds! Surprisingly, the melon is actually a fruit, and is only loosely considered a type of melon, according to the Wiki. Recently, farmers in Japan found a way to grow square/cubic watermelons for easy stacking (and less rolling around in your trunk!), but this variety carries a hefty price tag; twice that of the round variety.

Watermelon as art. Consider creating a family work of art, if you ever come across the wedge of a tree. It's fun for all ages.
