Homes for the Brave Stair Climb Challenge Raises $63,000 For Homeless Veterans

On Saturday, September 14th Homes for the Brave hosted its 5th Annual Step Up For The Brave Stair Climb Challenge. Over 360 Veterans, fitness enthusiasts and generous supporters joined together to raise funds for homeless Veterans by climbing stairs at Webster Bank Arena.

A total of $63,000 was raised for the Bridgeport-based nonprofit organization that helps homeless Veterans get the housing and services they need to return to a productive and meaningful life.

“Five years ago we held our first Step Up For The Brave event with a great concept and just 86 climbers. It has grown fourfold and allows us to provide the Veterans we serve with a place to live, food to eat and the vocational and supportive services they need. We’re tremendously grateful for the community’s support,” said Vince Santilli, CEO/Executive Director of Homes for the Brave

Climbers participated as individuals or in teams, following a course of 1,000 steps. Awards were given to: Gilbert Bonilla for ages 15 and under; Emily Ruggeri for ages 16-30 (female); Liz Martirano and Katie Wilkinson for ages 31-45 (female); Dave Galla for ages 31-45 (male); Catherine Oria- Williams for ages 46+ (female); Dave Stone for ages 46+ (male). Justin Halmose set a course record of 23 laps.

Fundraising continues through the end of the month. To make a donation to the organization’s work on behalf of homeless Veterans, visit www.homesforthebrave.org/stepupforthebrave
