Gun control continues to be a divisive topic in our country, especially in light of recent events. On Tuesday, May 22 at 7 p.m., the Milford Library will host a presentation that addresses this issue.
Historian Mark Albertson will speak on “A Well Regulated Militia”. This talk goes beyond the simple pro vs. con debate on the gun issue. Rather, it traces the evolution of the Citizen-Solder from colonial time to today’s National Guard. Is the militia concept as outlined in the Militia Act of 1792 still applicable, considering today’s National Guard as a bona fide reserve of the United States Army?
This thoughtful history examines the changes in America’s defense from the colonial era until today. Albertson will follow this evolution, which goes hand-in-hand with continental expansion, and centralized government control in the United States, as America severs its colonial roots to become a global superpower. Just what constitutes a Well Regulated Militia and how does it affect the citizen's right to bear arms?
