Wakeman's Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse to Host Its First Community Fitness Day, May 18

Bridgeport, CT — Wakeman Boys & Girls Club's Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse, at 2414 Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport, will host its first-ever Community Fitness Day on Saturday, May 18 from 11am-2pm. The free community event, open to all children and their families, is designed to encourage healthy lifestyles, prevent and manage disease and connect individuals and families to resources. The event will be held rain or shine as all activities can be relocated inside if needed.

The event is a collaboration between Wakeman Boys & Girls Club and Get Healthy CT (GHCT). GHCT is a local coalition of many different partners that works together towards improving the health of the Greater Bridgeport community. Wakeman is a facility that provides quality programs to hundreds of children from the Bridgeport community each year.

Fitness Day will include an obstacle course, interactive games and activities inside and outside, yoga, karate and Zumba for children and adults, fitness demonstrations, free books for children while supplies last, free health screenings for adults (18+),  information on local resources, educational workshops and giveaways and much more! Interested families will also be able to receive free, fresh and nutritious food from the Connecticut Food Bank Mobile Food Pantry, which will be on site from 1 PM-2 PM. Those who want to participate in the mobile food pantry should bring their own reusable grocery bags.

Get Healthy CT leaders looked to expand on the fitness goals of an event they had sponsored in Stratford over the last few years called National Dance Day. To reach a broader segment of the population, they decided to partner with Wakeman to launch this new event with a wider scope of interest to make physical exercise entertaining and bring information on community resources to area residents.
