Milford’s Racial Justice Book Club Discusses The Color of Law on February 9

Organizers of Milford’s Racial Justice Book Club will host their next virtual meeting on February 9, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. to discuss The Color of Law by Richard Rothstein.

The book club was formed to support a Milford Board of Aldermen Justice and Equality Resolution passed last summer to “build alliances with those committed to justice for all and to work together to support our shared conviction that racism must end.”  Co-Chair Jolyn Walker said, “Our hope is that these will be meaningful and honest conversations about racial injustice in the small city with a big heart.”

This month’s conversation will be moderated by Professor Yohuru Williams, PhD. Dr. Williams

Dr. Yohuru Williams is Distinguished University Chair and Professor of History and Founding Director of the Racial Justice Initiative at the University of St. Thomas. He received his Ph.D. from Howard University in 1998. He is the author of several publications that includes: Black Politics/White Power: Civil Rights Black Power and Black Panthers in New Haven (Blackwell, 2006) and Teaching beyond the Textbook: Six Investigative Strategies (Corwin Press, 2008)

This will be the third meeting for the book club. On October 13, 2020, residents of Milford, Orange. West Haven, New Haven, Stratford and Shelton discussed White Rage by Carol Anderson. The virtual event was moderated by Dr. Leon Bailey and featured panelists Walker and Milford resident Nija Phelps. On December 8, 2020, residents of Milford and surrounding towns discussed White Fragility (Why It’s So Hard for White People to Talk About Racism) by Robin DiAngelo. The facilitator for the December 8 discussion is Brittney Yancy, Assistant Professor of Humanities at Goodwin University in East Hartford, Connecticut.

For the February meeting, all are welcome to join in a respectful discussion. Registration is required. Please contact Jolyn Walker at Milfordblmbook@yahoo.com for information.
