Milford Mayor Blake Declares Local Civil Preparedness and Health Emergency

Today, Mayor Ben Blake declared a Local Civil Preparedness and Health Emergency in the City of Milford under the powers granted by Connecticut General Statutes § 28-8a and Milford’s Emergency Preparedness Ordinance, §2-106, Article VII.  This action will assist the City of Milford in preparation and response to COVID-19 and allow the City to take emergency measures in order to preserve and protect the public health, public safety, general welfare, peace, and security in the City. As a result of this declaration, the City can be eligible for federal reimbursement for activities related to COVID-19 response and ensures the City can swiftly address this rapidly changing situation.

“Following the state and federal government, the declaration of a Local Civil Preparedness Emergency allows the City additional flexibility in preparing for and responding to COVID-19. The City has been preparing for COVID-19 for months and continues to implement proactive measures to keep our community healthy and safe,” said Mayor Blake. “The City of Milford is a strong and resilient community – throughout the last several days it’s been encouraging to watch the community support each other and to embrace social distancing and other public health precautions,” Mayor Blake added.

As of 8:00 PM this evening (March 16, 2020), the following will remain in effect until further notice:

  • All restaurants, including bars, delicatessens and other locations where food and/or beverages are prepared for on-premises consumption, are prohibited from all in-restaurant and outside service. No customers are allowed inside a restaurant. Delivery of food and beverages as well as curb-side pick-up of food and beverages is permitted, subject to all existing laws. This prohibition does not apply to cafeterias where employers provide meals exclusively for employees and residents/patients.
  • All commercial gyms and fitness centers shall be closed.
  • All nail and hair salons/barber shops shall serve by appointment only.

While the news of additional cases can create great concern, we encourage Milford residents to take an active role by doing their part to remain healthy and limit community spread of this virus by doing the following:

  •                  Stay home if you are sick.  Do not go to work, school, or places where large groups gather, including shopping malls, movie theaters, libraries, playgrounds, etc.
  •                  Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60-95% alcohol, if hand washing is not easily accessible.
  •                  Cover coughs and sneezes with tissues and throw tissues directly into the trash.
  •                  Clean and disinfect high-touch surfaces daily in household common areas.
  •                  Older adults and individuals with underlying health issues should avoid situations that put them at increased risk for more severe disease. This includes avoiding crowded places and gatherings, avoiding non-essential travel such as long plane trips and embarking on cruise ships.

If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, please:

  •                  Call your medical provider before going to their office or call the Yale New Haven Health System COVID-19 Call Center at 203-688-1700.
  •                  Stay home except to get necessary medical care.  Do not go to public areas.  Avoid using public transportation.
  •                  Separate yourself from other people in your home by at least six feet.  Use a separate bathroom, if available.  Avoid sharing personal household items.
  •                  Monitor your symptoms.  If your condition is worsening (i.e. difficulty breathing), seek emergency medical attention.  Notify the healthcare provider BEFORE arrival that you have, or are being evaluated for COVID-19.
