Creativity Connects Milford: Meet Nancy Burke, Founder of The Bee's Knees

Creativity Connects Milford

What fuels a vibrant, connected, and creative community? What makes people feel good about living in Milford?

When locals share the creativity that they uncover in the nooks and crannies of their community it brings about connectivity and makes us all feel good. Believe it or not, you discover creativity every day as you walk, shop, work, and play in Milford.

Creativity Connects us.

Meet Nancy Burke, a beach lover and creative cafe owner.

How does creativity connect you to Milford?

Less than a year ago, I opened a small beach cafe called The Bees Knees, it’s built on creativity and inspiration! I want people to feel like they are the bee's knees when they walk into my cafe - that they are “all that”. My menu items are all a play on words to make people feel good: for smoothies, we have “Bee Strong”, “Bee Triple Love”, “Bee Green” (these are just a few!)

And, we are on wheels! We deliver lunch to beach-goers by way of a bicycle! What’s more creative than that? For deliveries to homes and businesses, we drive a colorful VW “Bug” that is colorfully decorated and has inspirational sayings on it like “Be Happy”.

Any place in town where you go for inspiration and creativity?

I love walking the boardwalk in Milford. The sunrise and sunsetting on the Kindness Rock Project (which can be on Milford beach) is something I cherish. People paint rocks they find along the shore and leave them so passersby take them. This has been particularly uplifting during the pandemic. We all need a reason to smile, we all need hope in a better tomorrow. The rocks are a small reminder that we are all connected and that together - we are stronger.

Is there a person or organization using creativity to provoke change in Milford?

Connecticut Audubon Society has a facility on Milford Point. Not only is it an incredibly serene and beautiful place, but they are advocates for Connecticut birds, preserving the bird population and natural habitat. They are big on education and offer programs for schools, families, and adults and offer summer camp focused on art, nature, and science.
