Creativity Connects Milford: Meet Tami Jackson, Executive Director of Literacy Volunteers, Community Volunteer, Nonprofit Advocate

Creativity Connects Milford

What fuels a vibrant, connected, and creative community? What makes people feel good about living in Milford?

When locals share the creativity that they uncover in the nooks and crannies of their community it brings about connectivity and makes us all feel good. Believe it or not, you discover creativity every day as you walk, shop, work, and play in Milford.

Creativity connects us.

Meet Tami Jackson, Executive Director Literacy Volunteers of Southern Connecticut, past president of Devon Rotary, Junior Woman's Club of Milford, community volunteer.

Tell me about an organization in Milford that makes you feel good

Literacy Volunteers is a very special organization to me. We support adult immigrants, coming to the United States, to begin a new life and engage in new opportunities. We help them with their English skills but also become quite close through sharing our different cultures and traditions. Diversity helps enrich the organization as well as our community.

Where do you go for inspiration and creativity?

Milford has the longest shoreline in Connecticut. I enjoy spending time wandering the many walkways at the beach or many trails we have in wooded areas of the city. The Kindness Rock Project is both inspiring and creative. I enjoy painting rocks and leave them on boardwalks and on wooded trails hoping to give someone a smile. It’s fun to see others being creative, painting, sharing positive thoughts. I think some Girl Scouts initially started the initiative on Walnut Beach and since then, many Kindness Rocks have popped up all over the shoreline and on wooded trails in Milford.

What do you love about your community?

Milford is the small city with the big heart. This is very true. We have wonderful neighbors, landscapes, activities, agencies and businesses that residents can partake in. Milford is a very caring and energetic community. We are lucky to have great leadership that makes this a priority. Mayor Ben Blake and Julie Nash (Director, Economic Development) continue to make Milford beautiful while keeping the quaint New England feel.
