Milford Police Report Reckless Burning Arrest

On Saturday, April 16, 2022, at approximately 4:20 AM the Milford Police Department responded to 112 Home Acres Avenue, the residence of John Katrick (52) as it was reported that he placed a speaker in his driveway and was playing loud music and disturbing the peace of the neighborhood.

Officers arrived and Katrick turned the music off from inside the residence but refused to speak with officers. An infraction for creating a public disturbance was issued at that time. At approximately 8:00 AM, the Milford Police Department again responded to Katrick’s residence on the report of him burning car tires in his backyard.

When officers approached the residence Katrick threatened to kill the officers if they trespassed on his property and then retreated into the residence. The officers remained on scene to address the fire and the threats made by Katrick. Officers saw Katrick place what was believed to be a rifle against a first-floor window of the residence. The item was retrieved by Katrick a few minutes later followed by Katrick closing the shades on all of the windows.

Additional personnel responded and a perimeter was established. Several residences on Home Acres Ave were evacuated or instructed to shelter in place. For the next several hours our crisis negotiators attempted to engage Katrick in conversation, but he refused to cooperate and remained inside his residence.

At approximately 8:00 PM, officers believed they heard a gunshot from within the residence. Our drone was deployed in an attempt to see inside the residence, but was unsuccessful. Our robot was then deployed into the residence through a back door. As the robot was being deployed, members of our Special Response Team observed Katrick in the residence and were able to talk him out of the house and take him into custody without further incident, at approximately 11:00 PM.

Thanks to the Milford Police Social Workers that were in contact with the staff at St. Raphael’s (YNHH) we were able to coordinate the medical care needed for Katrick and he was transported to the hospital shortly after 12:00 AM on Sunday, April 17, 2022. Milford Police Detectives remained on scene for several hours conducting a search warrant of the residence.

The interior of the residence was found to be in extreme disarray and a facsimile firearm was found. *UPDATE* An arrest warrant was issued for Katrick who was taken into custody on April 29, 2022. Katrick was held on a $30,000 bond and was transported to Milford Court later in the morning.

Katrick was charged with:

Attempted Assault on a Police Officer

Interfering with a Police Officer
