Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer Honors Three at Upcoming Gold Gala

The Tommy Fund for Childhood Cancer will honor three individuals at the organization’s Gold Gala, Celebrating 70 Years: Peter S Carozza, President Emeritus Uniformed Professional Fire Fighters of CT, Arthur Lemay, Retired VP Smilow Cancer Hospital Network, and the Capalbo Family of Fairfield.

The Gold Gala is an annual event that helps raise money for patients & families receiving care at the Tommy Fund Pediatric Hematology & Oncology Center at Smilow Cancer Hospital, Yale-New Haven, and affiliate Smilow Cancer Hospital Care Centers. The event will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, Apr. 21, at Anthony’s Ocean View in New Haven, CT.

Peter S Carozza (Waterbury, CT) is the “Gold Ribbon Champion” Award recipient, presented to an organization or individual exemplifying a long-standing commitment to the Tommy Fund. Carozza serves as a board member of the Tommy Fund and has been a crucial part of fostering the partnership between CT Fire Departments and the Tommy Fund.

Arthur Lemay (Trumbull, CT) is the "Tribute to Tommy" Award recipient, presented to an active, dedicated member of the Tommy Fund who passionately embodies the mission of benefitting childhood cancer patients and their families through committed acts of service. Lemay served as past treasurer on the Tommy Fund board and was the direct link between the organization and the Smilow Cancer Hospital Network until his retirement in 2020.

“I feel very strongly that the Tommy Fund offers a very unique and invaluable service that the physicians, nurses, caregivers, and the hospital couldn’t provide, and that was direct financial support for the patients and families,” said Lemay. “It was a pleasure to serve and work with the great people on the board and our great volunteers at the events.”

The Capalbo Family (Fairfield, CT) is the "Team Tommy" Award recipient, presented to a childhood cancer patient or their family that embodies the mission of the Tommy Fund of giving back. The Capalbo’s selected the Tommy Fund to be the beneficiaries of funds raised annually from the Fairfield Firefighters Charitable Foundation “Santa Express” during their late son Charlie’s treatment.  To date, this endeavor has raised $150,000 for the Tommy Fund.

“Every single time we came to the Tommy Fund Clinic, we were greeted with smiles,” said Jennifer Capalbo. “Every experience we ever had there was amazing. We  thank the hospital and Tommy Fund board of directors for this honor and felt grateful for their support during a difficult time in our lives.”

Reservations to the Gala’s Main Event include Gourmet Food Stations, Open Bar, Live Program, & Dancing to the Timmy Maia Band 7-11 p.m. The event will also hold a sold-out VIP Cocktail Hour Experience featuring a performance by the Whiffenpoofs of Yale University, Auction Preview, Passed Hors D'oeuvres, Tommy Tini's & More from 6-7 p.m.
