AAA Fairfield To Host Free Battery Checks on Thursday

If your car engine cranks slowly, your headlights are dim, or your dashboard’s charging warning lamp is illuminated, your battery may be in the throes of “heart” failure; it’s time to have it checked or replaced, says AAA Northeast.

“If oil is the ‘life blood’ of your car, think of your battery as the ‘heart’,” said Fran Mayko, AAA Northeast spokeswoman. “Now that pandemic restrictions have relaxed and more people are out and about, it’s a good time to have your battery inspected and to make sure your car isn’t ‘flatlining,’”

This Thursday (July 15), AAA is offering a free communitywide Vehicle Battery Checks:

When:     Thursday, July 15

Where:    AAA Fairfield

               1201 Kings Highway, Fairfield

Time:      10 am – 2 pm

No Appointment Necessary

As part of the inspection, a AAA technician will test the battery and charging system, examine connections, and share test results on the battery’s health. If the battery needs to be replaced, attendees may purchase a new one, which the technician will install on the spot.

To maintain your battery, vehicle owners should:

  •         Inspect/clean the battery case periodically using a mild detergent. Inspect for cracks and bulges that indicate the battery needs testing or replacement.
  •         Inspect/clean terminals. Check battery posts and terminals for corrosion and loose/cracked connections. Clean corrosion with a 50/50 solution of baking soda and water, using a small, stiff brush. Rinse with clean water.
  •         Get your battery tested. Have your battery and charging system tested by a professional, especially if the battery is more than three years old. Remember, a jumpstart will only fix the ‘symptom,’ not the problem.
