What Can I learn from Lee Garden, New Canaan

Learn about LEE GARDEN on February 29th at Lapham Community Center at 9.30am.

Lee Garden, formally known as the Olive and George Lee Memorial Garden, is New Canaan’s Best Kept Secret Garden, located on Chichester Road. It encompasses 3 acres of woodland garden with meandering paths that were originally owned and designed by George Lee, an azalea and rhododendron enthusiast. He left his garden to the NC Beautification League in 1978 and club volunteers have nurtured this town treasure ever since. 

The program will describe the beautiful plants, unusual ground covers and small bulbs that thrive in the shade of Lee Garden. In early spring there are many, many ephemerals---early blooming plants that grow, flower and set seed using power from the sun, all before the canopy trees leaf out and shield the sun away.  Additionally, there are many outstanding varieties of ferns and epimediums.

The dazzling highlight of the spring season, however, is the extensive bloom of the rhododendron and azalea collections.

George Lee was passionate about these cultivars and collected many different and unique varieties, which explode into riotous color throughout the woodland garden every May.

And while the May profusion is a perfect time for snapping photos, there is actually something new and in bloom almost every day of the growing season. Take a seat on one of the charming benches and listen to the many birds as you gaze around in your own private sanctuary.

Lee Garden, located at 89 Chichester Road, is open from dawn to dusk every day. Parking is available behind the fence, and dogs on leash are allowed. 

The talk will be given by Faith Kerchoff, co-president and longtime member of the NC Beautification League.  She is also co-chair of Lee Garden and has studied the writings and slides of George Lee and worked in the garden for the past 27 years.

In addition to a slide presentation, there will be live plant samples to see and learn about as well.  So, not only will you be hearing about a unique town destination; it’s also a great opportunity to discover what will work in your own shady spots at home!
