Explore the Art of Sogetsu Ikebana at Silvermine Arts Center this Fall

This fall, Silvermine Arts Center is offering an opportunity to delve into the beautiful world of Sogetsu Ikebana, the Japanese art of flower arrangement. With its origins deeply rooted in Japanese tradition, Ikebana is much more than simply arranging flowers. It is a modern form of sculpture that uses living materials to express natural beauty and creativity.

Two Classes Available for Beginners and Advanced Students

For those new to Ikebana, Introduction to Sogetsu Ikebana: The Japanese Art of Flower Arrangement is designed for beginner students eager to learn the fundamentals of this graceful art. Over six weeks, students will explore the traditional principles and aesthetic disciplines of Ikebana while unleashing their creative energies to enhance and express the natural beauty of their materials. Participants will also gain insight into the philosophy behind Ikebana, which emphasizes harmony, balance, and simplicity.

Students are encouraged to bring their own vessels, shears, pin-holders, and plant materials, though plant materials will be available for purchase from the instructor for a nominal fee. The class runs from September 21 through October 26, meeting on Saturdays from 10 AM to 12 PM. The course fee is $275.

For more experienced practitioners, the Sogetsu Ikebana: The Japanese Art of Flower Arrangement (Intermediate/Advanced) course offers a deeper dive into the art form. This class is tailored for those who are already familiar with the basic principles of Ikebana and are looking to refine their skills, explore advanced techniques, and experiment with new materials. The 12-week session will provide a creative environment for students to further develop their artistic expression while working closely with instructor Shizue Pleasanton.

The intermediate/advanced class runs from September 18 through December 11, meeting on Wednesdays from 10 AM to 12 PM

Both classes are led by renowned Ikebana artist Shizue Pleasanton, who brings years of experience and a deep passion for this traditional Japanese art form. Pleasanton is dedicated to guiding students of all levels to discover the meditative and creative potential that Sogetsu Ikebana offers.
