UPDATE: Power Outages Impact New Canaan Amid High Winds

This is an update on the power outages in New Canaan from yesterday's high winds. Eversource reports 143 customers without power, down from a maximum of 1,000 outages yesterday. Numerous Eversource and Contractor crews continue to work in town to restore power, Eversource has not provided any estimates for power restoration.

For those without power, the New Canaan YMCA has offered the use of its showers (bring a towel), they are open until 9PM today.

Lapham Community Center is also available as a warming location with hours of 830AM to 430PM.

We also recommend residents without power to consider turning off their water and draining their pipes to prevent freezing.

New Canaan, CT – February 17, 2025 – The Town of New Canaan Office of Emergency Management has issued an update regarding power outages caused by high winds affecting the area. According to Emergency Management Director Russ Kimes, Eversource reports that 11% of the town—approximately 949 customers—are currently without power.

The most significant outage has been reported on New Norwalk Road, where 511 customers are affected. Eversource has assigned a crew to address this incident. Additional crews are actively assessing blocked roads and responding to service requests from police and fire departments throughout the state.

Eversource has also reported that 15 critical facilities across Connecticut are without power, and efforts are underway to restore service to these locations as a priority. However, no estimated restoration times have been provided for New Canaan at this time.

Residents experiencing an outage can report it to Eversource at www.eversource.com/cg/customer/reportoutage or by calling 800-286-2000.

Authorities urge residents to stay clear of downed power lines and to treat every wire as if it were live. Additionally, residents are advised not to remove barricades from blocked roads, as doing so may pose a serious safety risk.

The Town of New Canaan will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
