New Fairfield residents John and Amy Pendergast will receive the "Hometown Hero" award from the United Way of Western Connecticut on February 27 at The Hometown Heroes Benefit Dinner.
United Way profiles John and Amy Pendergast of New Fairfield
John and Amy have made significant contributions to their community of New Fairfield over the years. John has volunteered his time coaching many sports teams in town including football and lacrosse, participated on various PTOs and assisted with shelter operations during many storms. He was also a volunteer fireman for many years in New Fairfield. John is always willing to help someone in need, always puts others before himself, and always finds time to help when asked. John loves his community, and the residents of New Fairfield are very grateful to have him.
His wife Amy has also been very supportive of the youth of New Fairfield. Amy spent years volunteering as a cheerleading coach; for some years while she was also managing Sprinkles Ice Cream in town. In 2009, Amy became the Varsity coach for cheerleading at New Fairfield High School, and she’s still coaching. Two years ago, John and Amy lost their son in a tragic motorcycle accident. Upon his death, he helped over 80 people as an organ donor. Even at a time of tremendous grief, the family showed selflessness in holding off their son’s burial, so it wouldn't interfere with high school graduation. The family has since embarked on a "Pay it Forward" campaign, in his memory.
Additional award recipients include:
- Corporate Philanthropy Award to Kimberly-Clark Corporation for exemplifying corporate social responsibility and demonstrating a strong commitment to giving back to the community
- Corporate Volunteer Award to Savings Bank of Danbury in honor of their leadership in promoting volunteerism as a part of their corporate culture
- Small Business Hero Award to Ralph McIntosh, Del-Tron Precision, Inc. in recognition of his leadership, commitment and generosity to the greater Danbury community
