Blossom Hill: Stories and Recipes from Refugees

New Canaan-based Blossom Hill, a non-profit with a mission to put children affected by war on a path to a better future, recently released a carefully curated cookbook based on recipes and stories from the beneficiaries of the organization’s programs.

"All the refugee children we serve were uprooted and endured horrific journeys when they fled war, and our programs are empowering them to once again plant roots in their new communities so they can thrive and pursue their dreams," said Shiva Sarram, Founder and CEO of Blossom Hill. “Many of their stories have been captured in our special cookbook in which they share their favorite recipes from what was once home.”

The cookbook, Roots: Blossom Hill Recipes and Journeys, has over 90 recipes from children and youth in Blossom Hill programs, as well as the Fellows implementing them, a few celebrity chefs, and staff. They
also include stories of their journeys to new countries where they resettled after fleeing war. Many of the recipes are specialties from the Middle East.

“It really feels like a family cookbook,” said Sarram. “So many of the children have been with us for
many years and it is a joy to see their progress and just how much they are thriving in these programs.”

The cookbook was presented last month at Blossom Hill’s Annual Fark to Fork Dinner where award-winning CNN anchor Alisyn Camerota lead a panel discussion with Blossom Hill Fellows. Blossom Hill is currently implementing 16 programs in childhood development, education, vocational training and technology in 12 countries around the world including the US.

The programs include a Montessori-inspired early childhood education center, science education that transcends language barriers, coding and other vocational schools, music and sports programs, and girls empowerment initiatives. All these programs are the first and only one of their kind in the regions they serve.
