Melissa Newman Jazz Trio to Perform at Silvermine on March 16

On Friday, March 16, Silvermine Arts Center will present a performance by the Melissa Newman Trio to celebrate its Art Partners Outreach Education Program. The trio includes jazz singer Newman, guitarist Tony Lombardozzi and bassist Phil Bowler performing in Silvermine’s Sara Victoria Hall. The evening will begin with a reception at 7pm, and the performance starts at 7:30 pm.

Last year’s sold out performance by Newman’s Trio was a highlight of the year and the group returns by popular demand.

Art Partners is one of the ways in which Silvermine Arts Center provides programs that give back to the community. Last year, Melissa Newman approached Sophia Gevas, the Outreach Education Director, and offered the Melissa Newman Trio for a free performance in support of this extraordinary program. This resulted in a delightful evening enjoyed by all. It was such a success that Newman offered a repeat performance this year. Silvermine enthusiastically accepted this generous offer.

Newman said, "I am so excited to perform, once again, in support of a program that increases opportunities for young people to create and engage with art.”

After a lucrative career singing jingles for companies like AT&T and Chevrolet, Newman began performing at numerous area venues including The Dressing Room, The Blue Lemon, and 323 Restaurant and Bar.  Her repertoire includes selections from both traditional and arcane jazz songbooks, and her unique stylings are masterfully accompanied by Lombardozzi and Bowler on guitar and bass.

Newman’s musical influences are many—her interests have included classical, alternative, R&B, and jazz. She also studied opera. Newman counts herself lucky to have had some successes singing jingles, but it is jazz that she loves, “I keep coming back to Ernestine Anderson, Anita O’Day, and Ella.”

A sculptor as well as a singer, Ms. Newman works in ceramic and porcelain, and her work has been exhibited at many venues including the Silvermine Galleries. She has been part of Silvermine’s community of artists since the early 1990s. She has also taught both art and drama at the Bedford Hills Women's correctional facility in Westchester.

Art Partners provides professional Teaching Artists to students in targeted, under-resourced Norwalk and Stamford schools. The program, which began in 1992 and now serves 1,000 students annually, creates curriculum-based studio art classes, which integrate the much needed 21st-century skills of critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and communication—which enhance life-long learning.

Tickets for the performance are $50 each and all proceeds benefit Art Partners.  To reserve your ticket for the March 16 performance, call (203) 966-9700 x 2 or visit https://www.silvermineart.org/events/performances.php
