Today I had the pleasure of meeting Danny Camporeale, Co-owner of Spiga (formerly Barolo) - who plan to softly launch in early August. Camporeale and his business partner Genaro Racanelli, own Molto in Fairfield, Lugano in Greenwich and two other established restaurants. They clearly know their stuff. When I asked Camporeale about the New Canaan location, he replied: "I saw it as an opportunity. I like that New Canaan is a walking, dining and shopping town and we want to work with the community as much as possible".
Camporeale, who hails from a town in Bari, Italy is friendly, likeable and sincere. He was quick to add that he had steadily worked his way up from waiter to owner.
For people who frequented Barolo, the interior has been completely transformed. Walls have been knocked through, the slightly odd 'snug' dining space has been removed and large banquets have been installed. The seating capacity is now a sizable 132 covers, with 20 outside. The owners secured J.P. Franzen Architects from Fairfield to remodel it, and instilled their own tasteful designs. A long bar, polished concrete, chainmail to provide private dining areas, and bold accent colors for the curved booths.
Happy hour is planned between 3-6pm, with Jazz on Sundays. Camporeale says: “We want Spiga to be affordable, fun and family friendly. The cost per head will be approximately $25. We enjoy wine as much as our food, so half priced wine nights are planned but for now we want to focus on welcoming people into the restaurant”. When I asked if there will be a party, Camporeale responded with a smile: “I’m sure we will do something to celebrate our opening”.
Look out for the launch of Spiga next week!
