Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story.

You're IT Treasure Hunt Tours!

Three questions with Rachel Lampen and Kristen Mitrakis, owners of Treasure Hunt Tours!

Why did you start your business?

We are both moms and we know first hand about the limited options for kids’ and adults’ parties! What’s out there already is great, but people need more options and we wanted to provide that. We create fully customizable, turn-key treasure hunts that get kids off screens and out into their community in an active and fun way. It works just the same for grown-ups, except that we switch up the challenges to be age appropriate. We’ve found that treasure hunters of all ages get that thrill of competition and achievement while using teamwork and problem-solving skills. The parties end up at a local restaurant for tallying scores, announcing the winners, and digging into cake and ice cream and either nibbles or a meal.

How many people do you employ? Any youth or seniors from the community?

The masterminding happens in our two-woman creative shop, but we engage teens and grownups to “become” cartoon characters, movie stars and famous singers that mean something to the guest of honor. They appear along the way during the hunt for a photo op or to deliver the next clue. So far we haven’t had the chance to employ a senior but we would love that!

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

We support as many downtown businesses as possible, plus we have the support from the local Chamber of Commerce. For example, in New Canaan, we’ve sent our treasure hunters to Mackenzie’s, L’Armoire, Oxygen, the New Canaan Library and Against the Grain - just to name a handful. It’s different for every event because locations are chosen based on the interests of the guest of honor.
