The 2019 New Canaan Ornaments are ready for purchase at the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society, 13 Oenoke Ridge.
Handmade by the Crafty Tuesday volunteer group, this year’s ornaments feature: New Canaan Beautification League, New Canaan EMS Ambulance Corps, New Canaan Mounted Troop, New Canaan Museum & Historical Society, and St. Aloysius Church. Each ornament sells for $20, and proceeds benefit the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society. There are approximately 100 ornaments available per design.
The Crafty Tuesday group has met at Lapham Center weekly from March through October every Tuesday morning to create and paint these ornaments. The designs are made by Faith Kerchoff; who makes a clear line drawing for a custom rubber stamp. Then she paints up a sample guide with color swatches to follow. 1/8th inch poplar wood is stamped and cut out, primed, sanded and painted. Holes are drilled and the name is printed in calligraphy on the back. Each hangs from a gold cord.
The ornaments commemorate dates and events in our town. The committee is open to suggestions for next year. Two ornaments this year have special 80th anniversaries–the NC Beautification League and the NC Mounted Troop. Two ornaments have name changes–EMS Ambulance Corps, and the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society. Through the years all the churches have been done, and this year St. Aloysius was chosen. The Society’s private collection of all the ornaments made through the years will be on display starting in November.
The New Canaan Museum & Historical Society is open Tuesdays-Fridays from 9:30 am – 4:30 pm, and Saturdays, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. For charge card reservations and pick up, call 203 966-1776.
In addition, the ornaments will be sold at the Courtesy Desk at Walter Stewart’s Market, 229 Elm Street through Dec 24th.
