New Canaan Emergency Management Director Update on Coronavirus

It is 7 pm on March 12th, this is Emergency Management Director Mike Handler with an update on New Canaan’s response to the novel coronavirus. As is to be expected, we are and will continue to see new cases of COVID-19 confirmed in the communities around us and we are seeing our neighbors take similar steps in response. Superintendent Dr. Bryan Luizzi is pleased to report that distance e-learning will begin tomorrow.

First Selectman Kevin Moynihan and Health Director Jennifer Eielson and I, along with our entire team in the Emergency Operations Center, want to take a moment to say thank you for the supportive town-wide reaction to yesterday’s actions. We are taking significant steps to reduce the rate of community spread and we know this is impacting all of you in dramatic ways. We know from plenty of experience that our greatest asset is all of you. In past storms, residents, businesses and not-for-profits came out in mass to volunteer and support our public safety efforts and those in need. That support was invaluable. This is different however. Given the circumstances, the best way to help us is to truly modify your daily routines—avoid large gatherings, maintain social distancing, frequently wash your hands, and continue to use sound judgement. Stay connected with friends and family in smart ways and continue to check on your neighbors. We are here to support all of you and will continue to provide you with new information as it becomes available.

Earlier today, the Governor signed several executive orders limiting large gatherings and visitor access to nursing homes, waiving the required 180-day school year, auto extending driver’s license renewals, and modifying police academy attendance requirements. The full order is posted on our Town website at www.newcanaan.info.
