Changes in New Canaan Human Services and Lapham Center Enhance Senior Services

As of July 1st, Bethany Zaro became our Director of Human Services having served as Interim Director since December 2019.  A registered nurse with a master’s degree in public health, Bethany started working for the town in 2008 as a part-time public health nurse and became senior outreach worker in 2015.  Noting that the COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges for Human Services, First Selectman Kevin Moynihan commented that “Bethany has done a terrific job in a very difficult time.”

Also as of July 1st, Human Services welcomed a new Senior Outreach Worker, Marcella (“Marcy”) Rand.  With a master’s degree in social work from Columbia University, Marcy will be working primarily with the adult and senior populations and will act as a liaison to Lapham Community Center to coordinate services. Marcy previously was employed as a Program Specialist at the Mather Center Home of Senior Programs in Darien since 2011.

With the retirement of Lyn Bond as Director of Lapham Community Center at June 30, Aggie Aspinwall has become Interim Director, having served as Lapham Center Program Manager.  Aggie has held several positions with the town since she began her employment in 2002 and has been at Lapham Community Center for nine years.  During the COVID-19 pandemic, she has been busy keeping programs going using Zoom and staying in touch with residents.

Cheryl Jones, Director of Human Resources commented, “These three staff developments are coming at a good time.  COVID-19 has shown us that it is critical to have coordination across departments to ensure that the needs of our residents are met.”
