Kevin Moynihan says New Canaan has fewest positive Covid cases in comparison to neighboring towns

In his community COVID update yesterday, First Selectman Kevin Moynihan reported that New Canaan has the fewest cumulative reported positive cases since March of any of our neighboring towns at only 189, whereas Darien has 219, Wilton 230, Westport 318, Greenwich 853, Norwalk 2100 and Stamford 3,348.

He also said that New Canaan's cumulative total reported positive or presumed positive cases of 189 includes 35 residents who died from Covid-19, who were principally elderly seniors with compromised health conditions.

Since March, Moynihan said that the Town has included in the local total of 236 positive cases 40 workers who are employed in town but do not reside in New Canaan. "In this context, it is important to realize that our Community Testing Program in June of nearly 3200 residents and Town employees and an additional 173 residents tested this past Monday with DOCS Urgent Care produced fewer than 10 total positive and presumed positive cases."

The great news is that New Canaan Health Director does not see a “spike” in local cases after the June 20 re-opening of many formerly non-essential businesses but rather, Moynihan says, "A handful of cases arising mainly from travel of residents or visitors from hot spot states or from visitors from neighboring towns and predominantly younger persons – no seniors have been among the recent cases. This should not be alarming to our residents."

While the community should be comforted by our relatively low cumulative number of cases of local infections, they should not be complacent, says Moynihan. "This pandemic is not over for New Canaan."

According to Moynihan, last week, there were several reports of parties in town and at Waveny Park that caused concern for the Health Department. "I urge parents to caution their teens and young adults to not be irresponsible and avoid large gatherings and wear masks when around others," he says.

"New Canaan’s record of success in avoiding viral infection is due to the personal responsibility that we took in the spring to have seniors stay safe at home, social distance when in public and wear masks when indoors in public places or in close contact with others – and also frequently washing or sanitizing hands when in contact with public surfaces like handrails and doorknobs," he adds.
