New Canaan Emergency Management Director urges resdients to be prepared for Hurricane Henri

This evening, Russ Kimes, New Canaan Emergency Management Director provided a community outreach message in regard to Hurricane Henri, informing residents that the storm strengthened and remains on course to make landfall on Eastern Long Island and Eastern Connecticut Sunday morning. Please read the complete message below:

The National Hurricane Center is estimating tropical storm-force winds of up to 75 mph beginning between 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. We recommend you visit the National Hurricane Center website at https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/ for the latest updates as conditions and forecasts are constantly changing.

We strongly encourage residents to finalize preparations for this major storm. Historically, power outages from tropical storms and hurricanes have lasted 5-7 days or more after winds have subsided and Eversource crews can begin restoring service.

The Emergency Operations Center will be activated at 8:00 a.m. Sunday to manage New Canaan's response to the storm as events unfold.

We are ready to stand up sheltering, if needed, as well as cooling and charging sites in town beginning Monday. Information updates will be sent to residents by Everbridge telephone and email/text outcalls as well as the Office of Emergency Management Facebook page.

Beginning tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. the EOC hotline will be available to receive non-emergency calls at 203-594-4100. If you have an emergency call 911. Do not call New Canaan Police Department.

We remind you to not approach or walk over downed power lines. You should treat any downed wire as being live and energized. Also, do not drive through standing water.

Stay safe, New Canaan
