New Canaan Museum & Historical Society Receive 1855 Carriage

This afternoon, Tuesday, January 14, the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society shared news of a generous gift from Brian O'Neill. The Historical Society is thrilled to have received an 1855 carriage hand-built in New York City.

According to New Canaan Museum & Historical Society, It was originally gifted to James Hoyt, Superintendent of the New York and New Haven Railroad from 1854-1870. "He had married Sarah Grey of Darien in 1838 and they had five children. The coach - the size of a small car with large wheels - was used for travel to church, and its last known use was for a 1903 wedding," they explain.

Although the interior silk upholstery needs work, New Canaan Museum & Historical Society says ivory ornaments and other detailing are exquisite and the carriage's original curved glass is intact."We are exploring ways to raise money for its additional repairs and to figure out how it can be permanently displayed, perhaps in the Tool Museum," they explain.

More to come on this! Stay tuned! #NewCanaanHistory Visit New Canaan Museum & Historical Society online here for additional information.
