Town of New Canaan Opens Additional COVID-19 Testing Time Slots for Thursday

It is 7:00 pm on May 26th and this is Mike Handler with an update on New Canaan COVID-19 Testing.  We knew that there would be large demand for high-quality testing, and we were not disappointed as 238-time slots were booked within minutes.  This prompted us to hit the pause button temporarily.

As of this message, we have opened up an additional 160 time slots for Thursday, May 28th.  We anticipate that these slots will also fill up quickly.  Once we are comfortable with the process, we will open up additional time slots for June 2nd, 3rd and 4th.  We have created an efficient process, which starts with your securing a reserved individual time slot and then completing the fillable Requisition Form which takes less than 5 minutes to complete.

We are prepared to test all New Canaan residents over the age of 10 with both a PCR nasal-swab and an IgG antibody blood draw.  Stamford Hospital will be utilizing Roche Cobas testing equipment for PCR analysis and Abbott Labs equipment for the IgG antibody analysis.  We chose this equipment because both test to 99% sensitivity and 99% specificity and provide the most accurate analysis available today.

Testing will take place at the Lapham Community Center, located at 633 South Avenue within Waveny Park.  Testing will be by appointment only and will only take 3 minutes to complete both tests.  To sign up for an appointment, please click on the following link: COVID-19 Testing Sign Up.   At this site, you will be instructed to select one time slot per individual requesting a test and to complete a simple fillable Requisition Form (it can also be found at this link COVID19 Testing Requisition Form).  Again, you must sign up for one slot and complete one Requisition Form per person.

We are prepared to conduct testing town-wide until everyone that wishes to get tested is able to get tested.  We are able to test 160 individuals per day.  On the fillable Requisition Form, you will be asked to provide your email address and to “check” the box giving us permission to email your test results to you.  You should receive your results via email within 72 hours.  You will NOT need to get a prescription from your personal primary care physician, but you will need provide their name and contact information.  This will enable your personal primary care physician to provide any needed follow-up.  If you do not elect to allow us to email your results to you, your personal primary care physician will share your results with you.

You will be required to enter your health insurance information on the Requisition Form.  There is no required payment at the test site (i.e. no copay).  However, the total cost for testing will be billed to your insurance company at $140 per person.  If you do not have health insurance or cannot afford the cost of testing, the Town of New Canaan will work with you to cover the cost of your testing.

You cannot get tested without an appointment and without a completed Requisition Form.  Please arrive no more than 5 minutes before your schedule test appointment, make sure that you are wearing a face covering and remember to bring with you a valid Driver’s License with a photo and your health insurance card.

We appreciate your patience as we attempt to introduce a fairly comprehensive and complicated testing program in Town.  Yes, there will be a few speed bumps along the way, but we are committed to perfecting the process and we are working tirelessly to provide you with the safest and most efficient process possible.
