New Canaan COVID Update: Community Testing at Lapham Center Continues Next Week, Government Buildings Reopen by Appointment June 22

As you may know from press reports, the number of coronavirus-related hospitalizations continues to drop throughout Connecticut as well as the number of reported new COVID-19 reported positive cases. In New Canaan, we have not had any new reported positive cases in over a week and no additional deaths.

To date, we have tested 1260 residents and workers for the Town, the Schools and other employers with our Community Testing program and have found ZERO positive COVID cases. This indicates that community transmission is low and the use of masks, hand washing and social distancing have been very effective in reducing the virus transmission in the last 90 days. It also shows our immunity in the community is very low so we must continue to wear masks, social distance and wash hands. The testing will be on going so please be patient and know we are committed to testing as many residents as wish to be tested.

Our Community Testing with Stamford Hospital at Lapham Center will continue next week. Testing will be Tuesday through Thursday every week from 8am to 4pm. You do not need a prescription but you must complete the lab requisition form that is an attachment on the Sign Up Genius at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/covid19testing.

Because of the good COVID testing results in CT, Governor Lamont accelerated his plans for Phase 2 re-opening of businesses that were deemed non-essential in March. You will be happy to know that gyms and fitness clubs, personal services like nail salons, limited indoor dining at restaurants, and other businesses, as well as swimming pools will be reopening on Wednesday, June 17th. Waveny Pool and the Waveny Paddle Tennis courts will also reopen on the 17th. Waveny Pool passes will go on sale online tomorrow.

Town Hall and other Town government buildings will reopen on Monday, June 22nd, for meetings by appointment, and on Monday, July 6th for public access.

New Canaan High School graduation is scheduled for next Monday, June 15th with a car parade of graduates and their families from the High School down South Avenue to Elm Street and returning to Waveny Park starting at 11:00 am and will last about an hour or more. Please be aware as you might want to avoid downtown at noon time that day. The rain date for the graduation parade is Tuesday, June 16th.

I am sure with all the news of re-openings we are all beginning to feel like things are getting back to near normal. But it will be a new normal as we progress through the summer. I urge you to please observe the rules of maintaining social distancing when in public, wear masks whenever you can’t maintain social distancing of six feet or more, and continue to wash hands and use sanitizer when in contact with public surfaces. If we all do that we will protect ourselves and our families and friends, especially our seniors.

Stay safe, New Canaan. Stay strong.
