Three Additional COVID Cases in New Canaan, More Positive Cases Anticipated as College Kids Return to School

This evening, in his Everbridge message, New Canaan First Selectman Kevin J. Moynihan provided the community a COVID-19 update saying that the town has had three additional positive COVID cases since Monday.

"Two of the new cases are college-age individuals with one of them currently residing out of state, and the third individual is mid-50’s.  All are isolated and not experiencing significant illness.  Our Health Director also notes that there were 154 additional negative test results reported to the state DPH this week for New Canaan," said Moynihan.

He said that with the return to college many of our college-age residents are getting tested as part of college COVID-19 testing protocols and they are anticipating more positive cases out of this age group because of this increased testing but many of these individuals may not be currently residing in New Canaan.  "Positive COVID-19 case data is reported to state and local health departments based on permanent addresses so it is not uncommon for our local health department to receive a case of an individual who is physically located elsewhere.

Moynihan noted that as summer winds down and school re-opening nears we remind parents and teenagers to please refrain from large house parties or large gatherings. "It is important not only for yourselves but for others that we all continue to practice social distancing, wearing masks when appropriate, and washing hands," he said.

New Canaan Students Return to School Next Week

"We would like to wish Superintendent Dr. Luizzi and all the students, teachers, staff, and parents a healthy, successful and safe school year. In this regard, please note that all school campuses will be closed to residents for walking, jogging or other recreational activities during school day hours," said Moynihan.

He ended his Everbridge message by saying, "We remind you that if you travel to any of the states on the Governor’s list of coronavirus hot states (except for less than 24 hours), you must quarantine for 14 days upon your return home and complete the travel form found on the state website. For the most current complete list of applicable states please visit the State’s coronavirus website."
