This past summer, Horizons at New Canaan Country School brought back their ninth-grade summer program for rising tenth graders to give students a productive outlet and opportunity to continue learning and grow their Horizons connections. Due to safety and health concerns and restrictions associated with the COVID-19 crisis, the program was conducted as a five-week distance-learning program.
The class participated in a Mock Stock Trading Challenge, a stock simulation game facilitated by peer instructor, Henry Benton of New Canaan, who developed and facilitated the financial literacy program and is currently a senior at New Canaan High School. The goal of the challenge was for students to create a stock portfolio they felt would have growth potential and then manage the stocks to maximize the value and growth of their portfolio. Students learned about investing money in stocks, managing their finances, different types of income, and even had the opportunity to watch interviews with professionals in finance, and engage in question and answer sessions with them. Henry said, “It was truly my pleasure to work with such a dedicated and engaged group of young men and women. A special thanks goes out to Bankwell, Horizons, and all the volunteer speakers.”
Founded in 1964, Horizons at NCCS is the first in a nationwide network of programs that are successfully closing the opportunity gap experienced by under-resourced students. Horizons at NCCS builds deep and lasting relationships with the 400 K-12 Norwalk and Stamford students it serves.
