Nine new COVID cases in New Canaan, 4 are high school students

This evening, New Canaan First Selectman Kevin Moynihan reported that there have been nine new positive COVID-19 test results for New Canaan residents since our outcall last Friday.  Four of the new cases are teenagers who attend New Canaan High School, two are college-age individuals currently residing out of state at school, one is a child under 10 who attends school out of town, and two are middle-aged individuals linked to other positive cases.

Please read Moynihan's update below:

All cases are currently isolating and doing well.  Contact tracing has been completed to identify close contacts, isolate them through quarantine, and contain the virus in our community. Our Health Director notes that there have also been a total of 97 additional negative tests reported to the state DPH since last Friday.  For complete information about our COVID-19 cases since March see the COVID-19 page of our Town website at www.newcanaan.info

While these newest cases show that the virus is present within our community, it is important to note that these cases do not arise from a single event nor do they appear to result from transmission at school.  Our Health Director is closely monitoring these cases to assure that there is not community transmission that might impact keeping our public schools on schedule for full in-person learning.

With the uptick in new cases it is important to remind you about common symptoms of COVID-19:  sore throat, fever over 100.4, chills or shaking chills, new loss of senses of taste or smell, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath and uncontrolled new cough.  The complete list of COVID-19 symptoms can be found on the CDC’s website.  If you or members of your family have any of these symptoms please consult your primary care physician for evaluation and possible referral for testing.  Testing is available at area hospitals and urgent care facilities. Please remember if you are symptomatic, stay home from work or school.  If you test positive, please contact the New Canaan Health Department immediately at 203-594-3018 (on weekends and after-hours call 203-585-8209).

We again remind all residents to please continue to practice social distancing when out in public, wear masks when social distancing cannot be maintained, and wash or sanitize hands frequently especially after contact with public surfaces.

It is also important to remind everyone that in our downtown village mask-wearing is REQUIRED since social distancing is hard to achieve on busy sidewalks.  We ask parents to remind your teenagers to wear masks when downtown and not to congregate in front of businesses.

Finally, we remind you that if you travel to any of the states on the Governor’s list of coronavirus hot states (except for less than 24 hours), you must quarantine for 14 days upon your return home or fulfill the testing requirements outlined in Executive Order 9B and complete the travel form found on the state website.  For the most current complete list of applicable states and to download the travel form please visit the State’s coronavirus website (https://portal.ct.gov/Coronavirus/travel).
