Creativity Connects New Canaan: Meet Faith Kerchoff

Creativity Connects New Canaan

What fuels a vibrant, connected and creative community? What makes people feel good about living in New Canaan?

When locals share the creativity that they uncover in the nooks and crannies of their community it brings about connectivity and makes us all feel good. Believe it or not, you discover creativity every day as you walk, shop, work, and play in New Canaan?

Creativity connects us.

Meet Faith Kerchoff, co-vice president of Civic Beautification, and a past president of New Canaan Beautification League, and thirty-year member.

Is there a person or organization using creativity to provoke change in New Canaan?

The New Canaan Beautification League uses creativity throughout the four seasons in town. We plant the large planters at town hall each season, for all the community to enjoy. As well as plan and fund all the hanging baskets in the downtown area. Then we decorate the town with greens for the holidays. Last year we planted two areas in Mead Park, in addition to the enhanced Mailbox drop-off area on Pine Street with a pollinator garden.

Other groups I admire in town are those that teach nature stewardship through community volunteerism. These groups include the Land Trust summer stewardships, New Canaan’s National Charity League and New Canaan Service League of Boys (SLOBS) programs where parents and children are learning ways to help within their own communities.

Any place in town where you go for inspiration and creativity?

I take a walk - something especially important right now!  I go to Mead Park, Waveny Park and Lee Garden, located at 89 Chichester Road. Lee Garden is property of New Canaan Beautification League, but it is treated as parkland. The garden is open to the public from dawn to dusk daily. It is an example of a woodland garden, with beautiful trails in a 3-acre property.

Finish this sentence: When I think of creativity in town I think of …

When I think of creativity in town, I think about New Canaan’s thirty-one different triangles and civic areas that Beautification League members care for. Over forty volunteers tend to them. I think about how each and every triangle is unique, reflecting the care of that individual. There must be a triangle near you! Enjoy the efforts of our volunteers when you drive by one.
