New Canaan COVID Update: Three Residents Currently Hospitalized, Testing Results in 3 Positive Cases

This evening, Monday, November 30th, New Canaan First Selectman Kevin Moynihan reported that last week we saw a total of 50 positive cases across all age demographics once again. Our community testing at Lapham Center last Monday through Wednesday of 189 residents produced 3 positive results, or a positivity rate of 1.59%, and these 3 positives are included in the 50 total cases for last week. There are currently 3 known hospitalizations of New Canaan residents at area hospitals for COVID-19 and all 3 cases are over the age of 70.

He said that the 50 cases last week also includes new cases reported to the state Department of Public Health since my outcall last Tuesday including Friday and Saturday.   Because of holiday reporting lags from the State and from providers we only have 4 new cases in the State database today.

Moynihan said, "As reported by the press, hospitals locally and across CT are seeing rising Covid-19 patient counts of all age groups and senior residential facilities also are beginning to have rising cases.  Most Covid-19 deaths across CT continue to be in the elderly age brackets with individuals who have comorbidities, although we have not had a Covid-19 death of a New Canaan resident since early August."

For complete information and to view updated charts about our COVID-19 cases since March please see the COVID-19 page of our website at www.newcanaan.info.

As announced last week, the Town is collaborating with Waveny LifeCare Network (“Waveny”) to offer daily PCR nasal swab testing for residents only at Lapham Center this week Monday through Saturday. This week’s registration through Wednesday is full and we cannot take any walk ins or additional appointments.  Collaborating with Waveny for daily test days will provide easier access for residents to be tested here in town. The link for this Thursday through Saturday test date registration is in your Everbridge email (https://www.signupgenius.com/go/COVID19wavenytestweek2).

Please note that you must sign up each person in the household under their own name and date of birth.  Please include complete insurance information in the text box provided on the SignUpGenius registration.  Results will be provided within 48 hours by email or text message from the Sema4 lab so please provide your cell phone number as contact phone number.

As a reminder, if you are experiencing any type of COVID-19 symptom please do not attend work, school, or any public or private gathering.  The symptoms for COVID-19 vary and some symptoms include: new loss of sense of smell or taste, sore throat, shortness of breath, dry cough, fever, body aches, chills, fatigue, and congestion. For a complete list of COVID 19 symptoms please visit www.cdc.gov.  We want to stress how important it is to recognize symptoms of COVID-19 and get tested.

We remind you that if you are traveling to/from a red state you are subject to the CT travel advisory requirements. If you travel to any of the states or countries on the list (except for less than 24 hours), you must quarantine for 14 days upon your return home or fulfill the testing requirements outlined in Executive Order 9B and also complete the travel form found on the state’s coronavirus website (https://portal.ct.gov/Coronavirus/travel).

Finally, please do your part in controlling the spread by wearing a mask, washing hands frequently and maintaining social distance. As a reminder all of downtown New Canaan is a required mask zone and with the holiday shopping season underway we appreciate the cooperation of all residents and businesses in complying with the mask zone requirements.

Stay safe, New Canaan.
