98% of residents 65 and older vaccinate, 81% of residents 45-64 vaccinated
In this evening's community outcall, First Selectman Kevin Moynihan reported that the state DPH reports that about 98% of our 3,000 New Canaan seniors over 65 have been vaccinated.
DPH also reports that 81% of the 45-64 age group and 61% across all eligible age groups (16 and over) in New Canaan have received at least one dose of vaccination. These are very encouraging numbers and we thank all residents for their patience and participation with the vaccination process. At least in New Canaan and Connecticut, we are seeing light at the end of the tunnel for this historic pandemic.
10,000 Vaccinations
This week our New Canaan Health Department will surpass 10,000 vaccination doses administered by our Lapham clinic. We would like to thank our Health Director Jenn Eielson, all of our Town staff, our two medical directors, Drs. Reed and Pierce, the School nurses (both public and private), EMS volunteers, local physicians and resident volunteers who participated in making our Lapham clinics possible. We will finish the month of May strong by helping remaining residents who wish to be vaccinated to get vaccinated locally.
COVID restrictions relaxed
As announced by Governor Lamont previously, certain Covid restrictions were relaxed effective this past Saturday, May 1, including the mandate to wear masks when outdoors. The Governor also announced that most of the State’s COVID-19 restrictions will expire on May 20th, except that wearing masks will likely still be required when indoors in commercial and public buildings.
Memorial Day and Family 4th Celebrations
We expect to have news very soon on plans for our traditional Memorial Day Parade and hopefully for our Family 4th celebration at Waveny Park with fireworks as well.
VACCINATION CLINICS
Our Health Department will be holding a Janssen (J&J) vaccination clinic this Wednesday, May 5th at Lapham Community Center. The Janssen vaccine is a single dose vaccine and individuals are considered fully vaccinated 14 days post administration. Per FDA authorization, you must be aged 18 and over to get Janssen (J&) vaccine; therefor, this clinic is open to anyone age 18 and over. The registration link for the J&J clinic is here.
If you are scheduled for a 2nd dose vaccination appointment this week the Health Department would like to remind you to bring your white vaccination card to your 2nd dose appointments so the Health Department can add the 2nd dose vaccination information to your card. Also, please come at your scheduled appointment time which is on the white vaccination card.
If you are homebound (physically or medically unable to get to a vaccination site) and would like vaccination at home, please contact the New Canaan Health Department at 203-594-3020 to schedule a homebound vaccination with the public health nurse.
The Health Department is expanding on-site mobile vaccinations to any New Canaan business that has employees still in need of vaccinations and wanting to be vaccinated. The vaccination is completely free, but business owners/managers must schedule the on-site vaccinations with the Health Department by calling 203-594-3020. This also includes local contractors with construction sites in New Canaan. The Health Department will provide Moderna or Janssen (J&J) vaccines for the on-site vaccinations so employees must be aged 18 and over to meet the FDA approval guidelines.
COVID-19 COMMUNITY TESTING
Our COVID-19 community testing with Waveny LifeCare will continue at Lapham Center with three days of testing this week and next. The link to sign up for this week's Thursday, Saturday and next Tuesday’s testing dates is here.
