Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Sama Yoga Center!

Three questions with Rebekah Jacobs, owner of Sama Yoga Center.

Why did you start your business?

I have been involved in yoga since 2006 and teaching for the past 10 years. I started doing yoga because it helped me feel grounded and free, and I started teaching yoga because it felt like a way to make a positive impact. After teaching for many years, including here in New Canaan, I was approached by the developers of Halo Studios to open a yoga studio. It was something I was not really ready to consider as a young mom of a two-year-old with another on the way! But it was a dream of mine to own my own studio, so I decided to jump in with both feet. Besides, my mother used to manage the dance store here in NC many years ago, so it felt a little like coming home! We’ve been open for three years now and I’ve never looked back. I’m so glad I did it!

Finish this sentence in regard for your business: “I wish I could . . . “

I wish I could help everyone understand that yoga is for every body, age and ability! So many people think they need to be this or that to do yoga: flexible, young, thin, etc. — None of this is true! Yoga truly is accessible to all. Logistically, I wish I could open another location. I love our studio in New Canaan and I always want to offer more. I have ideas for expanding.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products/services) and can you name them?

One thing that really excites me about what we do is the collaboration. From our teachers to our manager to maintenance, from marketing to printers to workshops to catering, each person’s contribution is a piece of our whole. It’s part of the complex fabric of what we do here and what makes it possible for us to soar. (We just made a beehive in our yard at home, it always reminds me of how important teamwork is!  It’s inspiring!) We sell merchandise from all over, and sometimes use local businesses to provide those products. We use local printing companies to print our schedules and we have worked with New Canaan's Green & Tonic and Greens On The Go for our special events. We love to collaborate with local businesses. We have also provided an entire week of yoga classes on-site at the New Canaan Country School, and some of our teachers have done classes at the New Canaan High School. Some of the local businesses we love to work with include:

  • Joe and team at Minuteman Press (Norwalk)
  • Green & Tonic (New Canaan)
  • Alyssa at Greens on the Go (New Canaan)
  • Teddy at Teddy B. Electric LLC (Bridgeport)
  • Vinny at Control Digital LLC (Greenwich)
  • New Canaan Laundromat (New Canaan)
  • Adam at Signarama (Stamford)
  • Carmella and Sherri At NC Graphics (New Canaan)

Sama Yoga Center tags Alyssa at Greens on the Go. "Her her philosophy, food and level of service are in line with what we believe in!  A female-run, small business owner and entrepreneur, we can relate to her passion and vision," says Rebekah.

Sama Yoga Center is located at 45 Grove Street in New Canaan. Visit them online here.
