Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You’re IT Walter Stewart’s!

Three questions with Doug & Alex Stewart.

When did you start your business?

Walter Stewart’s Market was founded by our Great-Grandfather in 1907 in New Canaan! We’re very proud to have served our community for over 110 years and 4 generations. We expanded our wine shop, Stewart’s Wine & Spirits, in 2016 in an exciting new building right next door at 215 Elm Street.  We wish we could continue to thrive in New Canaan and pass our family business onto the next generation in the future!

How many people do you employ?

We currently employ 67 team members in our Market and 4 in our Wine & Spirits shop. Many of our staff are local High School students, including members of the NCHS Class of 2018!

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

One of our longstanding traditions is to support our local non-profits and organizations. Our customers are very dedicated to local charitable organizations and we, in turn, are proud to support their favorite non-profits. From the New Canaan Community Foundation, A Better Chance of New Canaan to Strays and Others and New Canaan CARES, we provide support to our local organizations in many ways.

Visit Walter Stewart's and Stewart’s Spirits at 229 Elm Street, New Canaan, CT.

Walter Stewart’s would love to tag New Canaan Music and Pimlico (their neighbor at 215 Elm Street).

HamletHub thanks Fairfield County Bank for making our Why Small Businesses Matter series possible!
