Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Rock Paper Scissors Custom Events!

Three questions with Kristen Mitrakis and Rachel Lampen, founders of Rock Paper Scissors Custom Events.

Why did you start your business?

We are both moms and we know first hand about the limited options for unique parties for both kids and adults. What’s out there already is great, but people need more options and we wanted to provide that. Rock Paper Scissors Custom Events (formerly Treasure Hunt Tours) creates fully customizable, turn-key private events and parties that get teens off screens and lets adults be kids again.

How many people do you employ? Any youth or seniors from the community?

The masterminding happens in our two-woman creative studio, but we engage teens and grownups to “become” cartoon characters, movie stars and famous singers that have special meaning for the guest of honor at each party we design. They appear along the way during a scavenger hunt for a photo opp or in a mystery party to deliver a vital clue. So far, we haven’t had the chance to employ a senior but we would love that! Our Mystery parties are a huge hit as we come to your home or venue of choice and plant clues. For one party there were four generations of problem-solving together – it was lovely to see.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

It’s reciprocal. In the summer we devised and ran a Super Hero Training Camp for Live Girl, who are local. We involve and help as many local businesses as possible. We produce a seasonal brochure - Discover New Canaan, which allows local residents and visitors to walk downtown. Our Fall/Winter edition will be out at the end of September. We are working closely with Walter Stewart’s, Waffle Cabin, Pryority, Venture Photography and Against the Grain - just to name a handful. We would also love to work with realtors and brokers showing them downtown.

What’s unique about our business is that every event is different because locations are chosen based on the interests of the guest of honor so we can get to know everyone and other towns! In September we have a surprise birthday party in Sono, so that will definitely involve Washington Street restaurants! We will also be at Victory Cup Polo Festival in Westport on September 28th
