New Canaan BOS Adopts Parking Commission Recommendations

At its meeting on December 1, 2020, the Board of Selectmen adopted the recommendations of the Parking Commission regarding commuter and downtown parking as follows:

  • Defer commencement of renewals for commuter parking from January 1, 2021 to April 1, 2021.  This will be reviewed again in the spring.
  •  Resume charging fees for metered parking spots in the commercial parking lots at the pre-COVID rates beginning on January 1, 2021.
  • Resume charging for Permits for the Park Street, Telephone, and Morse Court Lots beginning on January 1, 2021 through June 30, 2021 at the permit fee rates previously approved for the 2020-21 fiscal year (pro-rated for the six months remaining in the fiscal year).  Sales tax at the rate of 6.35% will be added consistent with state guidelines.
  • Initiate a new experimental program of free downtown worker parking permits for the Center and Locust Lots for the period beginning on January 1, 2021 through June 30, 2021 in order to make other lots and street parking available for visitors/customers.  Any individual working in the downtown area may apply for and receive a free parking permit to park in the Center Parking Lot or Locust Parking Lot.  This will be reviewed in June.
