New Canaan Police Encourage Social Distancing, Asking Parents to "Just Say NO" to Gatherings

We, at the New Canaan Police Department, wish everyone to stay healthy and patient during this unprecedented time in our world, country, state and town. We are asking ALL of our residents to heed the recommendations of the CDC and other health and government officials as it relates to the Coronavirus.

At 4:30, on Friday, March 13th, First Selectman Kevin Moynihan, with direction from Director of Health, Jennifer Eielson, formally declared a local state of emergency. This action was taken specifically to enhance and bolster the Town’s response efforts aimed at slowing community spread.

If you're healthy, you might think that you don't have to limit your interactions with other people. And you could be thinking, the risk of developing pneumonia or needing hospitalization from COVID-19 is low for the average healthy person, according to the CDC.

But, limiting your social interactions reduces the risk of spreading the virus to people who may then spread it onto more.

Remember, social distancing is about helping other individuals—not just yourself.

Additionally, we are asking parents to "Just Say NO" to their children with respect to spending time in groups with friends. This suggestion would include avoiding parties and dinners together with groups of friends and even hanging out in groups outside.

The schools were closed to create social distancing and slow the spread. Parents, please follow this example and keep children home. Social media, Group Facetime, Skype etc will still allow your children to get face time with friends but in a much safer platform than in person.
