As supplies of sanitizing products become scarce and people resort to mixing their own concoctions, please be aware that the mixing of certain chemicals can prove very dangerous if done incorrectly.
Following is a brief list of chemicals that should NOT be mixed:
- Household bleach and ammonia – this mixture produces a toxic gas called chloramine. It causes shortness of breath and chest pains.
- Household bleach and vinegar – This will produce chlorine gas which will cause coughing, breathing problems, burning and watery eyes.
- Household bleach and rubbing alcohol – This produce chloroform which is highly toxic.
- Hydrogen peroxide and vinegar – This combination produces peracetic/peroxyacetic acid which is highly corrosive.
Many home-made sanitizers can be found online – just make sure to follow instructions carefully.
As always, do not hesitate to call 911 if mixing accidents occur.
