New Canaan police report uptick in theft from residential mailboxes

New Canaan Police report that they are seeing an uptick in the theft of mail from residential mailboxes. Specifically, thieves are stealing checks left in mailboxes and engaging in "Check Washing."

"Check Washing" is the process of erasing details from checks to allow them to be rewritten, usually for criminal purposes such as fraudulent withdrawal from the victim's bank account.

"Protect yourself and bring your mail directly to the US Post Office for mailing. It may be slightly inconvenient, but the prevention of this criminal act is very easy!" police say. "Another action step is to sign up for Informed Delivery, a free service from US Postal Service] to see what’s coming to your mailbox every day," they add.
