As tax time rolls around and we drag our feet begrudgingly to town hall, check in hand, one can't help but wonder, what's the deal with Connecticut Car Taxes?
The mill rate on personal property, or automobiles, in New Fairfield, was set for 2013 at $25.64 per $1,000 dollars of value on the car. Connecticut Governor Dan Malloy has fought hard to pass legislation that would eliminate car taxes on vehicles worth less than $28,000 dollars in Connecticut, a plan strongly opposed by local legislators. If the car tax were to be removed, counties across the state would loose revenue to the tune of millions of dollars.
Right now in New Fairfield, car taxes are over due. An initial 3% has been added to the original amount and a 1.5% fee will be added each month thereafter that the tax is not paid. Not paying property tax on automobiles will restrict one from registering or re-registering vehicles with the DMV.
