Little Town Big Impact: Relay For Life of New Fairfield

Almost every American today is affected, either directly or indirectly, by the harmful effects of cancer. In 2018 alone, it is projected that 1.7 million new cancer cases will be diagnosed in the United States and over 609,000 Americans will die from cancer.

These harrowing statistics reflect a great problem in our society today, one that the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life are trying hard to correct with funding for research, detection, support, and accommodations for the millions at risk. No single organization, except for the federal government, has contributed more to cancer research than the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life. Through their work and the work of many other groups, the cancer rate in the US had dropped 26% between 1991 (the peak of cancer deaths) and 2015. There have been 2.3 million fewer deaths from cancer during this period than if it had continued at the same rate. The fact remains that people are still being diagnosed and still many still losing their battles. The current rate of cancer diagnosis is much too high and much too pervasive in our society.

Thankfully, there is something WE can do.

Relay for Life of New Fairfield has raised more than $1.3 million in the past ten years. We are working hard all year round to plan events to raise money for research and programs like the Road to Recovery where patients get rides to and from treatment. We also like to celebrate cancer survivors and their caregivers at events like Bringo, the BBQ (on may 12th at Squantz Pond) and at our Luncheon on June 2nd. This is the 11th year of Relay for Life in New Fairfield and will take place on Saturday, June 2nd at 2pm at the high school track with the Survivor and Caregiver Luncheon at 11:30 am in the Cafeteria. That day is approaching quickly, and we hope you’ll be able to join us-- there will be vendors, food, and games all day, as well as the Luminaria Ceremony at night. You can join us until 11 pm when we walk alone overnight and close at 5am with the sun. All of the money raised that day goes to the American Cancer Society to aid in creating a future where nobody has to hear the words “You have cancer.” Help us create a world without Cancer.
