Alexandra Schajer, a recent Bat Mitzvah and a middle school student in Brewster, New York, is organizing a Blood Drive at Temple Beth Elohim on Sunday, January 6th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. to honor her grandfather who needed blood transfusions during his life. The address for the drive, which is run by the New York Blood Center (NYBC), is 31 Mt. Ebo Road North, Brewster, NY 10509. The drive will be held in the Vista on the Hill Banquet room. You must be between the ages of 16 and 76 and bring photo I.D. For more information please go to https://templebethelohim.org or www.nybloodcenter.org or call 1-800-933-2566. Medical Eligibility number is 1-800-688-0900. NYBC is a nonprofit organization that serves more than 20 million people in New York City, Long Island, the Hudson Valley, and New Jersey, Connecticut and beyond. The entire donation process takes less than an hour, and a single donation can be used to save multiple lives. Donors with O-negative blood type, or “universal donors,” are especially encouraged to give, as their blood can be used in emergencies. Nearly 2,000 donations are needed each day in New York and New Jersey alone. About one in seven hospital admissions requires a blood transfusion, and, with a limited shelf life, supplies must be continually replenished. Blood is used for a variety of purposes, notably the care of cancer patients, those with blood borne illnesses, newborn babies, burn and accident victims in addition to many routine surgeries. 1 in 2 people will need a blood product in their lifetime. Only 2% of local eligible population choose to donate blood. If only 1% more Americans donated, Blood shortages would disappear. There will also be volunteers from Transplant Support Organization with information on donor registration. Swab testing for bone marrow match will also be available on January 6th during the Blood Drive.
