Save Your Child from Accidental Plagiarism

As you begin purchasing college “stuff” for your child, add this workshop to your “getting ready for college” to-do list. Your child will be writing (regardless of major) more than ever in college, so they will need the skills taught in this workshop!

Since AI’s popularity has increased monumentally, college professors have been worried how the use of this new technology would impact students since it offers attractive shortcuts to citation, paraphrasing, and quotation skills, not to mention the actual writing of papers. In response to academic misuse of AI, many colleges and universities have redefined their definitions of plagiarism and updated their academic conduct codes.

Before your student heads off to college, prepare them for success with our Academic Integrity Workshop. This 90-minute workshop will cover relevant topics such as:

1.      What is plagiarism?

2.      When and how to cite

3.      Paraphrasing, quoting, and referring to ideas in others’ works.

4.      Citation Software (Endnote, Mendeley, Zotero) and Self-checking Tools (Turnitin.com or iThenticate)

5.      How to use AI and how not to use AI

Dr. Jeffrey Marano will offer this workshop. Dr. Marano received his Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering at Boston University, graduating Magnum Cum Laude. He then went on to complete his doctoral studies at Virginia Tech, where he studied the evolution of Zika and dengue virus.

He now serves as a postdoctoral fellow at Colorado State University’s Department of Biomedical Sciences, where he studies viral emergence in novel disease reservoirs. He has published in Virology, Viruses, Frontiers in Cellular and Infectious Microbiology, and PLOS Pathogens. During his tenure at Virginia Tech, Dr. Marano served as a member of the Graduate Honor System, where he reviewed many cases of plagiarism by graduate students, both intentional and unintentional, and has extensive training and experience in the topic of academic integrity.
