New Fairfield Youth Commission provides activities for Students in Grades 4 Through 8

Did you know that New Fairfield Youth Commission provides activities for students in Grades 4 through 8?

The mission of the organization is to “advocate for the youth of New Fairfield, create an atmosphere of mutual interest, sponsor programs, and to offer challenge and opportunities for personal growth.” The Commission provides a safe space for students in grades 4 through 8 to connect with their peers and spend quality time together, recognizing that social interaction is an important element of health and well-being for people of all ages, including adolescents.

Does your middle school student complain that there is “nothing to do”? Check out the New Fairfield Youth Commission!

Currently, the group sponsors monthly game nights, mostly on Friday evenings, at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in New Fairfield. Participants are encouraged to invite their friends and enjoy light snacks and refreshments. The Commission also works with local businesses and organizations to provide special events on game night. The New Fairfield /Sherman Animal Shelter recently made a presentation about animal adoption and Rebecca Archer from WholeFit provided a yoga workshop for the students. The Commission meets on the third Monday of every month to plan future events and is always looking for new members to get involved and share creative ideas for new activities for the students. Do you have a special talent or interest to share? Art, music, bowling, dancing, hiking, nature, crafting, science and technology? Would you be willing to chaperone a “field trip” to the movies, skiing, bowling, hiking or other fun location? Donating just a few hours of your time per month to the Youth Commission could help provide our students in grades 4 through 8 with fun activities to share with their friends. Student representatives from both High School and Middle School are also welcome.

The Youth Commission will also be co-sponsoring Chris Herren’s presentation on substance abuse with the New Fairfield Prevention Council and HVCASA at New Fairfield High School on April 25th. The Herren Project strives to educate youth about the dangers of substance use while motivating them to make healthy life choices, free from drugs and alcohol.
